Keeping Betta Fish in Distilled
Water and Other Water Issues

Can you keep betta fish in distilled water? Probably not the best situation. Distilled water lacks minerals required for a healthy fish.

Okay so you're probably thinking "Then what kind of water do i use for beta fish?".

Aged tap water is probably you best betta fish water type. Bottled water too perhaps. Just not distilled water.

Another bad combo is betta fish/aerrated water. With those billowy fins, too much water movement isn't good. The fish will constantly feel like it's swimming upstream. Not to mention bettas may be more apt to suffer from fin/tail rot. Somewhat still calm water is best for your fish's health.

Bettas, being tropical fish, prefer water in the 75-80ºF (24-27ºC) temperature range. Temperatures too cool and you're exposing your fish to disease. Higher temps and your fish will begin to show signs of distress. Most often having problems breathing. If the room temp is within the preferred betta water temperature range you don't need any kind of heater. If not, you'll need one to maintain proper temperatures to keep your fish healthy.

Finally you need to know what the ammonia level of the water is. Too high is fatal to the fish. A water tester will let you keep an eye on the water quality.
