Beta Fish

Beta fish, sometimes referred to as Siamese Fighting Fish, come from Southeast Asian swamps and backwaters. These beta fish have a primitive lung system which allows them to breathe air gulped from the surface in a pinch.

Beta Fish -
Living Jewels

The male beta fish are the pretty boys. More vividly colored than the females. Almost iridescent in some cases. And they come in a dazzling array of jewel-tone colors.

Weighing in at only about three inches long or less their brilliant, billowy fins are absolutely stunning.

Of course the beta fish found in your local pet store are nowhere near as glamorous as those bred by enthusiasts.

Competition quality males typically have fuller fins, better bodies, purer, brighter colors (scarlet, steely blue, buttery yellow, even jet black) than fish- store betas.

Beta Fish Favor Solitary Confinement

Still beautiful as the males may be, they must be kept by themselves since they do not tolerate other fish well. Especially other male betas. Being intensely combative they will kill any other fish they sense to be a rival.

Males have been know to jump out of one tank into another just to take on another male. Now that's intense.

Females are more tolerant less intense. You can keep several females together as long is the tank is big enough to accommodate them.
