Let's Talk Female Betta Fish

Female betta fish have short fins with less vibrant colors. Although some female betta fish can be darn near as colorful as the males. At the least a breeding female may have horizontal stripes or dark vertical bars.

Most female betta fish are usually raised in tanks with other females. So they're used to community living and are tolerant of female betta tank mates. For that reason you should be able to keep 4-6 female betta fish in a 10 gallon tank with a lot of hiding places. That sized group can coexist peacefully.

Pecking Order

But that doesn't mean that female bettas aren't still very much hierarchical fish.

That means initially, when introduced to their tank, they will "pick" at each other. Rarely does anyone get seriously hurt however. Just normal female betta behavior.

Yet despite some flaring etc, all will eventually fall into a pecking order with one dominant fish. Once established things should calm down considerably.

For that reason you shouldn't keep less than 4 in your group of girls...otherwise things can get pretty nasty for one f them.

Does this mean or can you put a male a female beta fish together? Well, the only time to put male betta fish with a female betta is for breeding. Otherwise it's best to keep female siamese fighting fish separated from the males.
