Common Betta Diseases

We just learned some tips for diagnosing betta diseases. Here are some some specfic treatment options to try when looking to cure various betta diseases.

Finrot is caused by an ever present bacteria. Improving the water quality will go a long way to resolving fin rot. Keeping water quality high will keep finrot at bay usually.

If that fails you can use Melafix, Maracyn (broad-spectrum, nontoxic antibiotic tablets), Neosulfex (broad spectrum antibacterial) or try an antibiotic like Ampicillex as a last resort. When treating with one of these do complete water changes every 2 days. Add more medication to the tank. Treat for a week and then reevaluate.

Treat velvet with Maracide.

To treat Ich you can try salt baths to get the ich parasites off your fish. Or you can use Coppersafe by Mardel or Aquarisol. Both of which contain copper salt which is very effective too.

In fact you might use a bit of Aquarisol as a pre-emptive treatment by conditioning your water to stop these parasites before symptoms appear.

For use as a general pick me up tonic you can use Bettamax. It can sometimes return your fish to it's previous self if you can't diagnose what exactly is wrong.

Generally you'll know your fish is back in the pink when

They're alert and swimming around normally.
Their fins are open and flowing as opposed to clamped tight or closed.

In the end regular tank and water maintenance will go a long way to fighting disease. A sick fish is a sign something is amiss in that end of your betta care.
